This app is an alternative youtube client based on minitube. You can watch videos and subscribe to channels. There is no login to youtube account. Subscriptions are offline.

Subscriptions can be imported. Import is in pulldown menu on subscriptions page.

Youtube api key is required to run this app. That's unfortunate but required due to recent google api changes.

If you scroll left on main screen you will have access to categories. You can set default category in settings

Filters are only available if you search for something.

You can donate me here paypal.me/MisterMagister

Then something has changed
Due to Google's policy?

Bsingleto's picture

I know this sucks. I went through the process of getting a api key. It took a while and i had to watch a couple YT videos oh how to do it, but i did it and it'll make the app work better. BUT NOW , i think im going to do a search online and see if i can just borrow someone elses key, because yes, google still has by video browsing history attached to my google ID.

Mister_Magister's picture

Now google's api key is super limited. Like… you can do max 100 searches per day not including watching videos etc. i don't have the money to pay google for its api key unfortunately. In youtube alternative apps for example app for kodi, people use own api key for ages. Minitube on arch comes without api key even

Klaas's picture

Thanks. I did. Problem: Google asks for my account, but I don't have one and don't want one.

Mister_Magister's picture

Too bad, you won't have youtube.

Klaas's picture

Even video's in subscription don't work. I am not a dev. Can you help?

Klaas's picture

I don't have an api key, never had. Where to find it?

Mister_Magister's picture

Go to settings and follow instructions.

Klaas's picture

Unfortunately search does not work. Links do not work either. I also tried it at YTplayer. Same story.

Mister_Magister's picture

They do work, just use your own api key.

dumol's picture

Using my own API key, but can't get 720p videos even when specifically choosing the option. Any ideas?

Mister_Magister's picture

Not really sir, youtube is kinda broken when it comes to those standards stream, some work some doesn't and untill i get DASH working which will allow all resolutions (all as in all) then i don't think there is any fix to that

dumol's picture

Thank you for the kind feedback! Looking forward to getting all resolutions available, as far as I know that would be a first in SFOS. Only got 720p so far and I miss using all my phone's pixels.

Mister_Magister's picture

That will be second first thing microtube did, first one was gestures :)

Leo_Moura's picture

After add the api key , the videos just load load ...

Mister_Magister's picture

Something must broke then

Bsingleto's picture

Yeah, sadly something has been broken for a while. Until last night i didnt understand or know how to put the API key in and havent been using my favorite app here on sailfish os. Well after putting in a API per the recent instructions, i'm no longer anonymously using YouTube which was a major benefit of this sailfish os app. But i get it now that i researched what API do and how they work for app development. Doesn't help with privacy and google, but it gets your app working. This is that was fixed by going through the process with googl3 cloud services to the API solved the playback issue I'd been having for over a month. It was fixed for about an hour of viewing with my newly acquired API v3 Key. But after returning to the app the next day, the same dreaded " CHECK INTERNET CONNECTION " where the only way to get videos to play is to close the app and start it again in order to play one video. Then repeat for every video, close, re open app, watch one video under my subscription, and repeat the process. The good thing is that my subscription list was update from upload date posted a month ago, to recently upload as of today's/ the current date. Now as of this evening, i cant get Trending videos to show or my subscription list to load a single video without the CHECK INTERNET CONNECTION on the screen. i have reinstalled it, refreshed cache, and installed it again via the desktop 7.rpm file. Not loading any videos at all now.

Mister_Magister's picture

", i'm no longer anonymously using YouTube" like if ealier you were. The only difference is that you were using my api key.

I'll look into issue.

Bsingleto's picture

"check internet connection" doesnt show up after two minutes of video watching. Maybe something has been fixed here. Haven't been using my favorite app for a few weeks because that error is frustrating to binge/catch up on my subscriptions. Just wanted to say thanks if its really fixed because i just watched more then two videos in a row without closing the app between each video

Mister_Magister's picture

Nice! it should improve in 2.0

Leo_Moura's picture

I love this app But in the last weeks im receiving an error: check internet connection. Any idea?

Mister_Magister's picture

Use your own youtube api key and all issues will go away

Bsingleto's picture

Donation Sent. i ENJOY using this app(smiley face with arms out)

Bsingleto's picture

Hehehe.... This is a FUNNY / angry / but correct post. i also had THIS issue solved with the same solution sadly, i still haven't donated to the developer like i said i was going to do once upon a time so i will do that before i report my latest issue, that i fixed once before also

fllp's picture

Since a few days videos will play with audio only, leaving the loading spinner animation running instead of showing a video.
I tried getting some debug info running microtube from the terminal but all i can make out is that video format '140' is chosen. No errors AFAICS.
is there any workaround?

fllp's picture

After digging around in the source code I found the commit introducing the audio only mode. For some reason I don't have a setting for this in microtubes preference page.
I ended up using dconf to fix it manually.

dconf write /apps/microtube/audioOnlyMode "false"
Mister_Magister's picture

you could just switch it like i said in other comment -_-

fllp's picture

As a matter of fact no, there was no pulley to disable audio only. Just a greyed out one saying '720p'. Maybe it's me but could be an UX bug here

Mister_Magister's picture

No it's not, cause it's not in fucking pulldown menu. You didn't read what i wrote.
