File Browser

Your rating: None Average: 5 (51 votes)

A comprehensive file manager for local files on Sailfish OS.

Use at your own risk. You can use this app to corrupt files and break Sailfish on your device. The author does not take any responsibility if that happens. So, be careful.

  • Browse and search files and folders
  • Share files and open files in an external app
  • Preview contents of images files, audio files, video files, compressed archives, databases, etc.
  • Select multiple files (by tapping the file icons)
  • Quickly copy, link, or move large amounts of files at once
  • Bulk rename, delete, or edit files and folders
  • Edit file and folder permissions
  • Create new files and folders
  • Show and hide hidden files (filenames starting with a dot)
  • Open multiple windows and move files between them
  • Copy, edit, or manually enter paths
  • Quickly filter files from the top pulley menu
  • Set per-folder view preferences
  • Save custom quick shortcuts for navigating and moving files

… and much more.

Limitations in Jolla’s Harbour store

File Browser in Jolla’s Harbour store cannot show all files due to mandatory sandboxing (Sailjail) since Sailfish OS 4.4. Inaccessible folders appear empty as there is no way for the app to determine if a folder is actually empty or simply presented as empty by the system.

Additionally, some file previews and integrated access to storage settings are disabled.

The version on OpenRepos is not affected by these limitations.

File Browser requires the following permissions:

  • Audio: for playing previews of audio files
  • MediaIndexing: to list all documents
  • RemovableMedia: for browsing USB sticks and SD cards
  • UserDirs and PublicDir: to show as many files as possible while restricted by Sailjail

Note: sandboxing is only enabled for builds in Jolla’s Harbour store. The version on OpenRepos has no such restrictions and can show all files.

Root mode

File Browser can run with administrator privileges to give you unrestricted access to your system. To use this feature, you must install Root mode for File Browser from OpenRepos. Root mode is protected by your lock code.

Hi @ichthyosaurus! The app crashes when I open a file from filebrowser since I've updated SailfishOS 3.3

ichthyosaurus's picture

That's quite unfortunate! I don't have 3.3 yet, so I can't test it. Could you start File Browser from the terminal and send me the output?

carmenfdezb's picture

Sailfish OS (Rokua)

ichthyosaurus's picture

That doesn't say much... I rebuilt the app today with the SDK but I didn't manage to set up the early access target. So we will have to wait until things settle :(.

carmenfdezb's picture

Ok, thanks for your answer!

ichthyosaurus's picture

It's fixed in version 2.2.0

carmenfdezb's picture

Thank you so much!

0xE4524FFE's picture

I get "App not responding" messages while doing operations on large amount of files or opening folders with a lot of files. It probably can be fixed by doing file operations in a separate thread, if you don't do this already. Also, could you please add functionality to open files with xdg-open?

ichthyosaurus's picture

Actually, both things are already done this way. There should be a progress bar when doing heavy operations... If xdg-open delegates to the wrong app, you could use Mimer to change it.

rdomschk's picture

Thank you verry much. It is for me the best choose of file manager. Could you also make a root version/patch of it? This would be great.

ichthyosaurus's picture

Thanks :) (@everyone).

Making a root starter is on my todo list, but I didn't manage (yet) to build it correctly... Until then, we can only use the old version with Schturman's root mode app :/.

Kabouik's picture

That changelog. Beautifully done.

Vieno's picture

This file manager is smooth and handy. Gonna be my first choice from now on. Thanks a lot for your effort.

Historyscholar's picture

Some strings are still English when I use Chinese:(

ferlanero's picture

Thanks! The i486 version works really good! I'll continue testing, in case there is some bug, I'll let you know.

ichthyosaurus's picture

Much appreciated :)!

carmenfdezb's picture

Hi icthyosaurus!! Thank you for your excellent work, this version is really nice!! I've translated your app to Spanish language (a PR is pending to accept ;)) and I know it's possible to use it in 'mode root', but I don't know how to do that. Please, could you say how to use your app as root?

ichthyosaurus's picture

Thank you very much for your PR :)!

As for your second question: there were two apps by Schturman to run File Browser as root, but they are not compatible with this version of File Browser. You can however install version 1.8.0 from Jolla's store plus this app to use the old version as root. Making a compatible root mode app is still on my todo list...

ferlanero's picture

An embebed root mode for File Browser would be just awesome!

carmenfdezb's picture

Nice!! Thank you ;)!!

ferlanero's picture

What about a i486 version to test it on tablet? It would be possible?

ichthyosaurus's picture

I added an i486 build :). I can't test it myself, though, so I just hope it works.

ferlanero's picture

Simply A M A Z I N G. Thanks for the development! Thumbs up!

ichthyosaurus's picture

Thanks :)!

Great app! Finally we have the best from both worlds: the simplicity of the traditional Jolla file manager, and the ability to conveniently select (and to copy/cut/delete) multiple files.

No donation link?

Thanks! That was exactly what I wanted to do ;).

I'll see if I can setup some donation thing...

Hello there. Thanks for your work and improvements. I've got one question, what is relationchip between native File Browser and your app. Will be your work mean as replacement of native version? Now I've got installed both, but they have same name and same icon. It is possible to differentiate a little your app (by name or some small "addition" to icon)?

Thanks :).

This is the same app, just with a lot of changes. Together with the original author we decided to release this version as a beta version which can be installed alongside the current release in Jolla store (v1.8.0). It is not a new app. If user feedback is positive, we will decide how to continue.

I plan to move on with this beta version and publish a stable version 2.0.0. Up until then, this package remains as harbour-file-browser-beta, whereas the version from Jolla store (or on OpenRepos from wiktorek) is named harbour-file-browser.

So to answer you question: yes and no. This version is meant as an update to the original version, but we need some user feedback before moving on.
