OKBoard (a.k.a. Magic Keyboard) is a gesture based keyboard that allow single stroke typing. Usage is explained in this video. English, French and Dutch are supported without the need for additional packages, other language resources are available in separate packages, e.g. for Swedish (okb-lang-sv). It should work on any Sailfish phone with screen size from 4.5" to 5".

Do not use other third party keyboards at the same time (unless they are just simple layouts for new languages).

Source code: http://git.tuxfamily.org/okboard/okb-engine.git/ and http://git.tuxfamily.org/okboard/okb-keyboard.git/. Instructions for adding new languages are included in README.md files (latin alphabet only at the moment)

If you get an error message about missing dbus-python rpm file when installing, just run "pkcon refresh" as root and try again.

Changelog:

0.6.17: Fix for SFOS 3.0 & for sound issue. This version is for SFOS 3 only. If you have an older version stay with 0.6.16 at the moment.

0.6.16: fix for SFOS 2.2.1 Nurmonjoki ... Thanks ade for the fix.

0.6.15: bug fixes

  • Fix for words that become impossible to type and to re-learn
  • Upgrading issue (keyboard would not appear after an upgrade)

Do not use the 0.6.11/12 that were temporarily published

0.6.9: support for devices other than Jolla phone: This is still unfinished / unstable, but i'm spreading it in order to get some feedback. Only tested on Nexus 5 so YMMV on other devices. Older language files can still be used. No change is expected on Jolla1 phone.

New features (cf. prefs app): WPM speed meter & logs sending form

Very nice app, finally a swipe like keyboard for sailfish! Works perfectly on my Xperia X, both in English and French

rob_k's picture

Wonderful, you made my day! Really happy that it is silent again. Thanks!

possible add russian?

The keyboard is working very well but unfortunately is not working well on webviews like sailbook, preventing me from using regularly... Anyway it's surely one of the best keyboards out there

Olsen's picture

Yeah!! The typing sounds are gone! So after almost half a year I finally can use OKBoard again.   :-)

Thank you very much, Eric! Typing was soo slooow!

Absolute thumbs up!! Great work! Thank you very much for your great work providing a high quality swipe-like keyboard for SailfishOS 3

ferlanero's picture

Since Sailfish version 3 the change of the active language has become unable. The only way you can change keyboard language is disabling Okboard, going into Configuration -> Text Input -> Change active keyboard and then enable Okboard again. Too many steps to this action. An update of this behaivour would be welcome. Thanks!

A new version will be out soon with proper support for SFOS 3 and some bug fixes (hopefully including the widely reported sound issue). Stay tuned.

Edit: obviously, the new gesture to switch language will be disabled, because it conflicts with word swiping

And cant change language with the space bar.

With Sailfish3 new feature to swipe to change keyboard layout, need to work out a way to keep that feature with OKboard on.

skyjumper's picture

Hi, thanks for the update. I have the latest SFOS installed. When using, the keyboard inserts fullstops after words and adding a hyphen at end of words without my doing anything which is rather annoying...

I really love OKBoard. But since SFOS 2.2.0.29 it generates loud clicking sounds while typing / swiping, even when the phone is muted (ringer and media). This problem has been reported before. Same behavior on Jolla 1 (loud) and Xperia X (very loud). No change with SFOS 2.2.1.18. Removing and reinstalling OKBoard doesn't help.

I'd be very happy if this issue could be fixed since OKBoard is unusable for me at the moment.

PawelSpoon's picture

In my case it inserts spaces see here. All spaces are there

Thanks for the fix ! Any chance to get rid if the info message? Clicking does not help on my phone. I mean it goes away, but the next.time irs back update: i had german and austrian language.pack installed. That caused the messge issue

from th release notes of 2.2.1 Nurmonjoki:

  • [nemo-qml-plugin-dbus] Remove deprecated 1.0 import.

As you are using version 1.0, it no longer works in 2.2.1 and blocks the keyboard with okboard installed. Using the import of 2.0 solves the issue.

eber42's picture

Thanks for the report. Change is already committed. I will release a new package this evening after testing on real devices.

Edit: it's up now, please report any issue.

i would like to request a feature: an option to never insert spaces, and another option to never auto-capitalize a word. i was trying to clone the repos to see if i could add this without too much trouble myself, but repo is down apparently (Cannot obtain needed blob 6a313971a767e841a1f3ea7eb68f4f3be3bff42e)

eber42's picture

It seems there was some temporary issue with the repository. At the moment git clone works'

how do you get publisher role here? i applied for it a few weeks ago, but the role isn't approved since then...

breiti_oi's picture

Is there a way to force the use of spacebar in android apps? In native apps everything is okay, but on whatsapp or telegram I have to set the spaces between the words by myself, which slow the input down.

eber42's picture

Unfortunately, SFOS keyboard framewok (maliit) does not give me access to the context (content of the textbox & cursor position) when using android apps, so I do not known when to insert a space. I have no idea how to solve this issue at the moment. I will probably ask on TJC or SFOS dev ML.

I am new at Okkeyboard.

Is there anybody to teach me how to check its working on iOS or Mac...?

eber42's picture

Sorry only Sailfish OS is supported at the moment. But you have a lot of better alternatives on iOS anyway.

smatkovi's picture

I'm trying right now with 100 000  words, but it is  working for hours  with 4Gb  ram.  I'm curious to hear about your experiences here

eber42's picture

Oops I've been a bit slow on this one. But there is an interesting discussion & answers at the end of this TMO thread

smatkovi's picture

how many words  should the input dictionary have?  and has anyone  of you tried doing this for Hungarian?

spheniscus's picture

I confirm rob_k's post. Using a "classic" Jolla Phone JP1. Loud sounds when typing text. Disabled OKboard --> silence. Enabled OKboard --> noisy. Appeared after updating to Sailfish OS v2.2.0.29.

Frederik

Thanks to you & Rob for your feedback. I will look at this issue when I get some time. At the moment I can't reproduce this behaviour with Jolla phone & Xperia. Can other people confirm if they experience the same issue (or not) ?

Problem may be caused by the "hackish" way to integrate with original jolla keyboard that is very sensitive to changes.

erikderzweite's picture

Confirming the issue on Sailfish X with 2.2.1.18 Nurmonjoki. Did not found a way to  turn off the sounds yet.

rob_k's picture

Clicking sounds in SailfishX.

Dear eber42, since a few months I got hooked on your wonderful OKboard again. Unfortunately, today's update to Mouhijoki resulted in loud clicking sounds when using the keyboard. Different sounds come out for normal keys, space bar and OKboard swipes. The sounds are too loud to ignore, so I had to turn OKboard off for now. Changing the Settings for Sounds and Feedback does not help.

Hoping for a solution. Thank you,

Rob
