An alpha-quality native XMPP client for Sailfish OS and Ubuntu Touch, written in Rust.

Note: 32-bit build is temporarily unpublished, as it seems to not be installable.

Features

  • OMEMO encryption: End-to-end encrypted messaging via OMEMO, supporting OMEMO 2 and OMEMO legacy (blind trust at the moment).
  • Private encrypted groups: Invite-only group chats that are always OMEMO-encrypted.
  • Public channels (MUCs): Join and participate in public XMPP group chats, with member lists, mentions, and whispers.
  • Rich messaging: Text, images, image galleries, video, voice messages, audio, documents, and stickers; replies; emoji reactions; message editing; delivery and read receipts with status indicators.
  • Message sync: Your conversations are synced between all logged-in devices via MAM history, and messages sent while offline are queued and delivered on reconnect.
  • Contacts & presence: Roster management, adding contacts, and blocking (XEP-0191).
  • Push notifications: XEP-0357 push notifications via the Livewire Push Service, with a background-run fallback when push is unavailable (for Sailfish OS, requires a UnifiedPush distributor such as Foghorn).
  • Account creation: In-band registration where the server supports it.
  • Media handling: Download and display images, video, and audio.
  • Mobile-data aware: Client State Indication when unfocused, data-usage tracking, and automatic reconnect on network switch.

Not Currently Implemented

These are features not yet implemented, but are on the road map.

  • Searching for public channels (channel directory)
  • Voice/video calls (let's call that a streeeeetch goal)
  • Jingle

Do you want to use XEP-0357 push notifications? Also install Foghorn. Otherwise, the app will function just fine with a persistent connection as long as it's open.

Changelog:

The #NoMoreYolo Update.

Version 0.7 implements OMEMO trust and PubSub channels, along with a handful of other random features.

OMEMO is no longer yolo (blind trust): you can verify devices and pick a trust policy. Trusted OMEMO devices are automatically synced between compatible clients. By default, Livewire uses an "informational yolo" approach similar to Kaidan's default OMEMO trust policy. QR code verification is not yet available.

PubSub channels let you follow XMPP-based feeds and blogs directly from Livewire. This gives Livewire basic Movim compatibility. Making posts or comments is not yet supported.

The usual numerous bug fixes accompany these new features.

  • Feature: OMEMO trust: verify devices, set a trust policy, and sync trusted devices (XEP-0434, XEP-0450).
  • Feature: Follow PubSub channels and blogs, synced across your devices (XEP-0277, XEP-0472).
  • Feature: Friendly OMEMO device names for OMEMO 2.
  • Feature: Automatically negotiate encryption with other Livewire users when a chat starts (XEP-0155).
  • Feature: Show when contacts were last active (XEP-0012, XEP-0319).
  • Feature: Support MUC activity indicators (XEP-0502).
  • Improvement: All group chats are now called groups due to PubSub channel feature.
  • Improvement: Reorganization of encryption settings, particularly on Ubuntu Touch.
  • Improvement: Finish full implementation of XEP-0384 (OMEMO), minus QR code verification.
  • Improvement: Outgoig translations are marked as machine-generated (XEP-0171).
  • Improvement: Better offline support.
  • Improvement: Faster startup and group joins.
  • Improvement: Mentions and highlights only match whole words.
  • Improvement: Linkify anything that looks like a JID.
  • Improvement: Avatars show up when sending or receiving a group message while in the chat.
  • Improvement: Contact presence shows in the chat list.
  • Improvement: Link previews only load for public HTTPS URLs.
  • Improvement: Sailfish OS: Changed wording of connectivity modes (functions all the same).
  • Improvement: Allow jumping to old messages.
  • Fix: Set avatar to public when changing avatar.
  • Fix: Sailfish OS: Numerous fixes to the push notifications connectivity mode.
  • Fix: Ubuntu Touch: Faster, smoother scrolling, and fix jittery message jumping.
  • Fix: Voice message recording now actually works.
  • Fix: Edited messages are replaced in place.
  • Fix: Workaround Kaidan's broken multi-body handling when using translations (XEP-0171).
  • Fix: Account switching now works sensibly, and you don't have to log out on SFOS first.
  • Fix: Encrypt all metadata (typing indicators, read markers, reactions, etc) when using OMEMO 2.
  • Fix: Broken OMEMO legacy sessions get auto-repaired, even if the app was closed.
  • Fix: Push no longer misses messages or turns itself off after a failure.
  • Fix: Fewer (hopefully zero) gaps in group chat history after reconnecting.
  • Fix: More reliable and optimized message display sync (XEP-0490).
  • Fix: Reconnect when the connection dies, and do not connect twice at startup.
  • Fix: Go back to the login page when login fails.
  • Fix: Replies work in chats with translations (XEP-0461).
  • Fix: Editing your most recent message works again.
  • Fix: Only accept encrypted locations from their real sender (XEP-0477).
  • Fix: Sailfish OS - UnifiedPush distributor detection now works on 5.0.x.
  • Fix: Don't attempt to redownload attachments we already have.

Can test 32bit package for you. Let me know through XMPP at dumol@jabber.org, thanks!

You can find the 32-bit RPM for the current stable version here: https://git.agnos.is/projectmoon/livewire/releases/tag/v0.7.0

The report is based off a few random messages from someone in a MUC, so I have very little information about what's going on. I would at least expect it to install, even if it doesn't launch...

I can't believe that there is a app for XMPP with this great progress, I hope you continue to develop

There is a slow connection to the server and a slow arrival of notification, and is there a solution to reach the alerts and the application is closed?

Very Nice!
