fiat ratio - budget tool

The salary came on Friday. The rent goes on the 25th. The electricity cost more than last month.

fiat ratio keeps the month from one salary to the next: what came in, what went out, and what is still to come. It grew out of a personal finance database I have kept since 2022, and became an app when my Jolla Phone arrived.

What it does

  • A budget month that starts when the salary arrives, or on the 1st. One big number: what is left until the next salary.
  • Rent, insurance and other recurring costs are entered once and planned up to two years ahead. You confirm each one when it happens, with the real amount.
  • Trends: a month, three months or a year, each category beside what is typical for you.
  • Income over time, and a look at the months ahead.
  • Savings, a home and loans add up to one net worth, with amortisation and interest kept apart.
  • Correct an account's balance when the app and the bank disagree.
  • Everything goes out to one open JSON file and comes back in from it. A CSV export for spreadsheets too. (I can create a csv-to-json-script for those interested in adding current finances to the app)
  • A practice run with made-up numbers, kept apart from yours.
  • Costs you split can be entered at the full price (to reflect bank account), with only your part counted.
  • Fiat colours, or follow the ambience.

Languages

English, Swedish, German and Russian. I speak all four and have gone through every text myself, but mistakes can still be there since I'm not native on all. Corrections are welcome on GitHub. Additional language? Let's figure it out together!

Your data

Everything is kept on the phone, in the app's own storage. Exports are saved to Documents/fiat-ratio. Nothing leaves the phone: no account, no bank connection, no network. Permissions: Documents, to save exports, and Downloads, to read a file you bring in.

The name

fiat — Latin, let there be. ratio — reckoning, account; also reason. The Romans kept their accounts in the same word they used for thinking clearly.

Magnum vectigal est parsimonia.
Thrift is a great income. — Cicero, Paradoxa Stoicorum VI.49

Built for Sailfish OS 5.1, aarch64 and armv7hl. The 32-bit build has not been tried on a real 32-bit phone yet; reports are welcome.

Part of the fiat family — small, focused Sailfish OS apps that do one thing plainly.

Yeeeeeeeees, I used some AI again, but see no reason for you to be too doubtful: it asks for documents on your phone, not even internet. That's just because it'd be complete shite if you meticulously did your economy for one year and had no way of exporting the work before phone runs corrupt or breaks..

Hi! loving your app suite so far, this ones Interesting, and one i could quite see myself using with a few suggestions.

Would it be possible to add more options regarding payday? (Weekly, Bi-Weekly, 4 Weekly, Monthly fixed date, Monthly with a moving date (I.E, the last friday of a month) it would increase usability for a lot of users!

A shift calendar to view shifts and track compensation for those periods would be a nice addition too, something akin androids "Work Shift Calendar" featureset :)
