wine
Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD AND NOW - HARMATTAN. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.
Not supported in this release:
XFree86 Vidmode, multi-monitor, GLU, OpenCL, Direct3D, schannel, scanners, digital cameras, Color Management, OSS, ISDN, CUPS, gsm 06.10 and mp3 codecs, OpenAL, LDAP.

It seems to be possible to combine an x86 emulator like Bochs with Wine, which would allow native x86 windows applications to run on ARM. It would be slow, and likely too slow on the N9's Cortex A8 core, but on newer devices (Jolla? Tablets?) it might be enough to run many more applications.
I remember someone ran Windows 95 in an QEMU/Bochs emulated PC on a Nokia N95. Reaaally slow, but emulating hardware is not needed with Wine, and even the 1GHz A8 is much faster than the 332MHz ARM11 of the N95

The point is, I could do it ;)
And no, the screenshots are from a runnking N9.
There are - a few - windows applications bundled with Wine, Notepad, Clock and Wordpad being some.
Allthough it is thrue that not all (that is even true for the i386 Wine) will not run and that it does take a compilation for the ARM architecture. This does mean, that some applications build for especially the new windows ARM platform will be able to run. And some apps for windows (fx Putty) has already been prepared and is ready to use in Wine. So, it is not utterly useless.
But, nobody says you need to use it ;) Consider it PoC or use it for just showing off ;)

What's the point in Wine on N9 if windows executables will still need to be compiled for ARM architecture?
