The Nice Editor

ne is a free (GPL'd) text editor based on the POSIX standard that runs (we hope) on almost any UN*X machine. ne is easy to use for the beginner, but powerful and fully configurable for the wizard, and most sparing in its resource usage. If you have the resources and the patience to use emacs or the right mental twist to use vi then probably ne is not for you. However, being fast, small, powerful and simple to use, ne is ideal for email, editing through phone line (or slow GSM/GPRS) connections and so on. Moreover, the internal text representation is very compact--you can easily load and modify very large files

Version 3.1.0 is out. How about updating the Sailfish package?

vevgeniev's picture

Sure, I'll put that in my TODO list :)

rolfa's picture

Thanks! I think this is the most complete and useful text editor currently available for Sailfish OS (Undo! Search! Syntax Highlighting! etc.).

Note: to make the backspace work correctly I created /home/nemo/.ne/.keys with this content:

KEY 7F Backspace

bertjefred's picture

How do you do this exactly? thanks. And will backspace actually work as backspace and not as delete?

Schturman's picture

what about version for tablet ? ;)

vevgeniev's picture

Done :)

This app is causing real problems. Apart from the fact I cannot find it after it is installed, typing 'ne' into terminal shows 'command not found'.

Pkcon remove yields nothing and when I go back to openrepos to remove it, warehouse is showing 'current operation' and appears to be going through absolutely everything installed - even after reboot!, causing warehouse to 'not respond' repeatedly.

Once installed, the app bin file, is not present in /usr/bin and a search for 'ne' yields nothing.

Can't find it, can't get rid of it either!

Warehouse has an issue with the name of the package. When I open the app in Warehouse it lists all packages containing ne in their name and Warehouse stops responding. I reported the issue to the author of Warehouse:

Otherwise ne installs fine as rpm and runs fine.

Okay, I downloaded the app to my pc, bluetoothed to phone and installed - yep, it installs fine and works fine, but downloading through warehouse is not fine.

You need to rename the application, Basil explained to you, the app name is too short. The actual RPM name is too short (is what I understand), naming it 'ne-0.3-1.armv7hl.rpm' is too short - recompile the app again with a longer name, like 'nice-editor-0.3-1.armv7hl.rpm'. This may well resolve the installation problem through warehouse/openrepos

I will rebuilt the package with a longer name and upload it again.
ne is the original name of the app, I built it "as is", without any modifications.

vevgeniev's picture

The package is renamed. Please try again.

Cool!, now it installs cleanly, runs nicely and uninstalls properly :)

So Basil was 100% correct with his advice (good to know) - "short app names cause problems with repos" (at least in this case)

Glad to hear it.
Yep, he was right - short names should be avoided.

Any screenshot of app ?

vevgeniev's picture

It's a command-line application. I am using a port of SailfishOS and it does not support taking screenshots. I would appreciate it, if you take one.

type 'grabscreen' in terminal - in theory, this should dump the image to your Gallery.

vevgeniev's picture

It always produces all black images.

Also ScreenTapShot app can take screenshots from terminal window.
