Ambience AllBlack v0.5.2

Note* - The slider in ambience settings can be moved to get colours other than white, but you will not be able to revert back to white when you 'Tap to reset' the ambience; reinstalling Ambience AllBlack is the only way to restore the ambience.

I really like this new "waffle" background for this ambiance, and I like it more than the constant reminder about the OS or the manufacturer that a central white logo gives.

I would however like to make a small request if possible. Some of the non-Jolla devices that Sailfish can be installed on like the Nexus 5, OnePlus X and Fairphone 2 have 1080 x 1920 resolution displays and the background doesn't scale to cover the entire screen. Would it be possible to have a high-resolution version with either this lovely "waffle" background or even just a plain completely black background please?

Hi,

try the 0.5.2 version I've just uploaded. The reason the wallpaper didn;t fit, was due to me reducing the image by 50% from 2048px to 1024px.

The wallpaper is now at 2048x2048 and should fill the screen properly on any other no-jolla device running Sailfish.

Let me know and perhaps I can knock up one to include just a plain black background.

Hello,

Thank you kindly for this new version.

I updated to 0.5.2, however the background is still displayed as shown here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/zwxpfjiaf4uyz09/Screenshot-16-04-13-18-30-06.p...

This is on a Nexus 5 device running 2.0.1.7 Taalojarvi.

Maybe just one with a plain black background would be easier to make, but I hate asking such a personal request. Either the nice waffle pattern or a plain black one is fine by me.

hmm, no problem, I don't mind people asking/making requests.

Not sure why this is happening. Sounds like the old one is still 'hanging' around. Open terminal and type in;
'$ systemctl --user restart ambienced.service', this might prompt ambienced.service to show the background correctly. After all, the image is 2048px x 2048px.

If the above does not work, remove any ambience-allblack from your device, reboot, reinstall the ambience.

I have noted that similar things happen in Gallery with images of the same name when I'm editing the same image over and over and sending to Jolla over bluetooth, the 'updated' image doesn't always show right away, closing Gallery and reopening usually fixes that though.

It may be worth checking in 'usr/share/ambience' to see that the 'old' ambience is completely removed before installing the latest one.

Otherwise, I'm blind here and have no other non Jolla device to investigate upon, so if none of the above works, let me know and I'll make a plain black version for you.

Thanks for feedback!

Thank you kindly for the detailed and clear instructions.

I first tried to restart the ambience service daemon (ambienced, where the 'd' on the end stands for daemon if I recall correctly) as you instructed in the terminal. That did not change anything.

Then I restarted the device, and uninstalled ambience-allblack and rebooted. Then I went to 'usr/share/ambience' and checked the list of folders. 'ambience-allblack' or something similar to that was not there, just all the Jolla ambiences were listed. I reinstalled ambience-allblack from warehouse and restarted the device.

Upon reboot, I changed to the ambience-allblack ambience. There was no change from what I posted above. I went into 'usr/share/ambience' again and found a folder called 'ambience-allblack'. In it I found a folder called 'images', which contains 'ambience-allblack.jpg'. I checked the properties of 'ambience-allblack.jpg' and it was described to have the resolution of 1024 x 1024, which is not 2048 x 2048 as you have described above.

So I did something I am not proud of, and that is that I copied your waffle background into an image editor and stretched it out to 2048 x 2048 (well, I copied the original 4 times because it is a repeating pattern so that the quality remains the same), and then replaced the 1024 x 1024 'ambience-allblack.jpg' with this abusive of your author's rights 2048 x 2048 derivative work. I don't even know what licence you offer your work under, so if I have offended, I am sorry, and I will delete the derivative image if you so desire.

Anyway, I rebooted and everything works now with the waffle background covering the entire screen.

So either my device isn't updating the package correctly, or there is an issue with the package, or something more sinister is about.

I also now know where to put a completely black background if I tire of the waffling.

Thank you very much for this excellent ambience and the excellent support you provided me for my issue!

Is there a BIC + IBAN one can donate a few Euros to so that you can enjoy a beverage of your choice on me?

Right, it seems I need to stop trying to be creative late at night. The image was wrong, the .ambience file was wrong - all a mish-mash of things I have been trying.

You are correct, the image is still only 1024x1024 (no good for larger desktops, I know!).....okay, now I've had a clean up and have repackaged the ambience for the umpteenth time. It should now display as I originally wanted it to.

I'm really not worried about people taking my work and doing their own thing with it, seeing as I have really only taken cues from other people's work in order to make ambience packages, although, it took me ages to learn how to do it.

The very fact you offer a little something is more than enough for me, thank you, but keep your money :)

However, if you are feeling brave, try version v.5.2 again - it should work properly now!

Thanks dude.....

Outstanding, the new version 0.5.2 works very well!

Thank you most kindly for the delightful ambiance.

Appreciated! :)

I like both the new and the previous one, but i kind of would like to have both somehow.

Since they are so different one from another, could you possible create two different packages? Kind of miss the jolla logo on my screen now that i updated to the latest one..

Thank you!

PS: Could you also create one all black ambience with just the sailfish logo on the wallpaper, like in my avatar? That would be really cool :)

Thanks for your comments and your idea/request, I'll see what I can come up with - watch this space! :)

Thank you Mentard! ....much appreciated :)

Nice. Is it possible to unlock the color setting in the "appearance" menu?

Markkyboy's picture

Thanks :)
There are only 4 parameters in the .ambience file to add colour profiles to. If I choose anything other than white (#FFFFFF), then the colours can then be changed in the appearance menu, but it won't offer white. I really only created this theme for myself and I'm happy with the restrictions personally, but I agree, it would be great to be able to have the choice of white as well as colours.

I wish I knew more about coding, I'm just a tinkerer!, but if I learn a way to do it, I will update the ambience.
