Not working correctly with XperiaX for some users.

Works on Jolla1 SFOS3. (for me at least)

Version 1.3 for SFOS 2 - Version 1.4 for SFOS 3

An idea originally created by s_mario (https://together.jolla.com/question/130703/patch-email-client/).

This patch removes the horrible bright white background from plain/html emails including a slight increase in text size for better readability. Thanks to coderus also for suggestions regarding unnecessary code within the patch.

Enjoy!

@Markkyboy

After updating my J1 to 3.0.0.8 and PM3, I finally got the chance to test your patch ;-). Same problem here, as with the other user, plaintext ok, html does not work (white background).
In the patch, I miss a line with "experimental.transparentBackground: true".
If the patch works for you, maybe you have ist activated globally in the SilicaWebView.qml?
As I found out now, we only need to insert this once in the HtmlLoader.qml (line 76). And it works with me again.

Thx for your work.

Cool, thanks for the return input, i will look into it asap. I have a few apps to sort out, just need to find the time.

Intex SFOS3 & latest patch: plain text emails ok with black bg, html emails on white bg.

Same for me with Jolla1 and Xperia X both running SFOS 3.0.0.8: works fine for plain text emails but doesn't work for HTML emails. Worked fine on both devices with latest SFOS 2 release. And yes, I've upgraded the patch to version 0.1-4.

It works only with text emails. Html still has white backround(on Xperia X)

I'm on SFOS 2.2.0.29 / Xperia X with v0.1.3 of this patch. Both text and html emails are displayed as expected, with dark background.

The bug is for Sailfish3 / Xperia X and v0.1.4 (v0.1.3 doesn't work in Sailfish3)

Thanks for the quick adaption to SFOS3. Still looking awesome. Should be adapted by Jolla. Looks also very nice with new light ambiences.

Markkyboy's picture

Thanks naytsyrhc, your comments are appreciated, I'm glad it works for you, shame it is not working for our XperiaX owners.

naytsyrhc's picture

I'm also on Xperia X. And you are right. Just found out, it doesn't work on HTML mails...

Today's update cannot be activated on my devices (Jolla 1 and Xperia X, both running SFOS 2.2.1.18): "Failed to install patch". Removing the patch, running pkcon refresh an reinstalling again does not fix it.

carmenfdezb's picture

v0.1-4 is for SailfishOS 3

Olsen's picture

This means everyboby who runs FSOS 2 and just updates his apps/patches through Storeman will get a non functional patch? Hmm...

Markkyboy's picture

Yep or maybe nope. I have problems with PM3 and my device, either be patient or simply scroll on by, but.... above all else, ALWAYS read the description first before updating anything.

dirksche's picture

Stay on 0.1-3 since you updated to Sailfish 3

objectifnul's picture

v0.1-3 is fine. v0.1-4 is not (fails when trying to enable - Sfos 2.2.0.29)

dirksche's picture

Okay.
I sent myself two messages, first html second just text. Html is presented with a white, just text with a transparent backround.

dirksche's picture

Hey Markkyboy, no reason to send the money back.

Edit: do you see the mail adress the paypal donation was sent from? You can contact me if you want.

Markkyboy's picture

sorry man, my conscience got the better of me, I struggle to accept remuneration for poor 'work', a kind of "no fix, no pay" kind of thing, but, thank you.

dirksche's picture

Thanks. I hope more donation will arrive you. I use Xperia X and after remove, refresh, reinstall it's still white and grey.

Edit: you are right, some have a white backround and some have transparent. But I cant't see no pattern. Some Emails from the same sender are white, some are transparent.

Markkyboy's picture

I have returned your donation, as much as I am grateful, I won't accept it simply because the patch does not work for you and I cannot troubleshoot as I do not have an XperiaX to test with. Thanks again. You still remain the first person to donate, that's good enough for me!
Hopefully, somebody with an XperiaX will 'have a go' at troubleshooting this one. I have just sent myself a plain text email and a Rich text email, no difference, both have transparent backgrounds. I'll play as much as I can with my Jolla1 and see what I find, if anything.
Thanks again,

dirksche's picture

Wow. You are fast. Thanks. Feedback: the backround is still white and the text color is light- grey. Text size is good and fits the screen

Markkyboy's picture

Thanks for the donation - that's my first ever donation!, much appreciated :)

Obviously I check and double check before uploading apps/patches, but of course, errors can occur. But in this case, I do not see a white background or light-grey text, making it very difficult to trouble shoot for end users. What device are you using?, I'm using Jolla1.

Try removing the patch, then doing `pkcon refresh` and then installing the patch again.

I'm curious about such problems, as other uses have said the same thing prior to this update. I don;t really use my phone for general email activites as it is too fiddly for me, as a result, the only emails I do look at are from eBay and Paypal, both of which do not exhibit white backgrounds or greyish text. Perhaps I need to test with a different type of email, maybe the difference is Rich Text and Plain Text emails, I will investigate further.

carmenfdezb's picture

The same for me

dirksche's picture

Thank you for the possibility to finally be able to read my emails. Please update. Is there a possibility to donate?

Markkyboy's picture

EDIT: New version uploaded,  Donation link added.

Hi, I'm having a few minor problems after updating my device, General app updating and patches are not performing as they should, making it difficult to repair/update my own apps. As soon as I've fixed, I'll upload. I'll add a link for donations later, thanks.

Kabouik's picture

I was just adding details and tryng to troubleshoot the text scrambling issue, no pressure!

Kabouik's picture

I just tested and the issue happens as well without QtWebit 5.212, so I guess it's related to the Jolla C instead.

I agree with the earlier comment that it would be nice to disable the temporary white background that shows up during loading, it is particularly aggressive when checking emails during the night. :]

Markkyboy's picture

The whole idea of the patch is to eliminate the white background, which I thought we had achieved, especially as I do not see it at all on Jolla1. I still have a few things to try, but at the moment I have my hands full creating a new bathroom. I'll do what I can, but progress on the patch will be slow for a while.
s_mario has made a few suggestions, when I get 5 minutes, I will shoe horn them in, but for now, I'm way too busy.

I have also Xperia X and must say - its fine. Better than the old white.
